Carnival Midway from The Jerk Welcome to the inaugural 2007 edition of On the Moneyed Midways, the blogosphere's only weekly review of the best business, management and money-related posts from each of the week's major blog carnivals! Each week, we select not only the best posts from each of the blog carnivals we read, but we also select one post as being The Best Post of the Week, Anywhere!(TM) But that's not all! We also recognize the close contenders for the best post of the week that was, which you'll find identified below as Absolutely essential reading!(TM)

But not this week! To prepare this week's edition, we looked back at 2006 at all the blog carnivals we reviewed and the bloggers we selected as having a top post from each one. We prepared a list of the blogs whose work we had cited more than once or those for whom we had provided a special citation and then we went to their blogs and read all their most recent work. In doing this, we separated the blogs of those we found to be good from those we found to be consistently good to great.

As with every edition of On the Moneyed Midways, we listed as much top notch work as we could find. Here at Political Calculations, we don't believe in setting an artificial limit on quality; we just want more of it! All in all, there are 20 entries in this week's edition, which you'll find below along with our attempt to describe why you should be reading them on a regular basis. But don't take our word for it - go see for yourself!

Just scroll down, and let's hope 2007 makes for a much longer list!

Recession Probability Track

Recession Probability Track - 12 July 2005 through 10 July 2009

Political Calculations' Recession Probability Track shows the probability that the U.S. economy will be in recession 12 months from the indicated date (shown in red) while revealing the probability trend over the past four years.

Previously, the probability of recession peaked at 50% on 4 April 2007, which means that March-April 2008 was the most likely period in which the NBER would have found the U.S. to be in recession.

As it happens, they almost did. The NBER instead chose December 2007 as the beginning month of the most recent recession (we had found a 46% probability for a recession beginning in that month!)

Political Calculations is also the online home of On the Moneyed Midways (aka OMM), a review of the best posts contributed to the week's best business and money-related blog carnivals. More than that, we also name one post in each edition as being The Best Post of the Week, Anywhere! and at the end of each year, we name The Best Post of the Year, Anywhere! as well as identifying the best blogs we found during the course of the year!

The link below will take you to the running index containing our most recent back issues (you can easily navigate the index to find older editions.)
