Welcome to the inaugural 2007 edition of On the Moneyed Midways, the blogosphere's only weekly review of the best business, management and money-related posts from each of the week's major blog carnivals! Each week, we select not only the best posts from each of the blog carnivals we read, but we also select one post as being The Best Post of the Week, Anywhere!(TM) But that's not all! We also recognize the close contenders for the best post of the week that was, which you'll find identified below as Absolutely essential reading!(TM)
But not this week! To prepare this week's edition, we looked back at 2006 at all the blog carnivals we reviewed and the bloggers we selected as having a top post from each one. We prepared a list of the blogs whose work we had cited more than once or those for whom we had provided a special citation and then we went to their blogs and read all their most recent work. In doing this, we separated the blogs of those we found to be good from those we found to be consistently good to great.
As with every edition of On the Moneyed Midways, we listed as much top notch work as we could find. Here at Political Calculations, we don't believe in setting an artificial limit on quality; we just want more of it! All in all, there are 20 entries in this week's edition, which you'll find below along with our attempt to describe why you should be reading them on a regular basis. But don't take our word for it - go see for yourself!
Just scroll down, and let's hope 2007 makes for a much longer list!

Welcome to the blogosphere's toolchest! Here, unlike other blogs dedicated to analyzing current events, we create easy-to-use, simple tools to do the math related to them so you can get in on the action too! If you would like to learn more about these tools, or if you would like to contribute ideas to develop for this blog, please e-mail us at:
This year, we'll be experimenting with a number of apps to bring more of a current events focus to Political Calculations - we're test driving the app(s) below!

A Lot, But Not All, of Our Tools
Political Calculations' U.S. GDP Temperature Gauge provides a means to quickly evaluate the growth rate of the U.S. economy against the backdrop of how the economy has performed since 1980, with the "temperature" color spectrum ranging from a recessionary "cold" (purple) through an expansionary "hot" (red).
The GDP Temperature Gauge presents both the annualized GDP growth rate as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reports for a one-quarter period and also as averaged over a two quarter period, which smooths out the volatility seen in the one-quarter data and provides a better indication of the relative strength of the U.S. economy over time.
